The South Western Railway (SWR) commenced normal passenger train services on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru line with the resumption of night train services, except the Karwar-KSR Bengaluru Panchaganga Express, from Monday.

Services on the line were suspended following the accumulation of debris on the track caused by heavy rain-induced landslips on Saturday night, between Shiribagilu and Yadakumari stations on the Subrahmanya Road-Sakleshpur Ghat section.

Mangaluru Central-Vijayapura-Mangaluru Central (Train No. 17378/17377), KSR Bengaluru-Karwar Panchaganga (Train No. 16595), KSR Bengaluru-Kozhikode-KSR Bengaluru (Train No. 16511/16512), and SMVT Bengaluru-Murdeshwar-SMVT Bengaluru (Train No. 16585/16586) Expresses will run normally from Monday night, SWR Mysuru Division Divisional Railway Manager Mudit Mittal told The Hindu. A track-fit certificate was issued to operate trains through the affected stretch at 7.25 p.m. on Monday, he added.

As the Bengaluru-Karwar Panchaganga Express was detained at Sakleshpur on Saturday and did not reach Karwar, the Karwar-Bengaluru Panchaganga Express (Train 16596) will not operate on Monday for want of a rake, he clarified.

With track clearance given late in the evening, all night services are operating behind schedule, delayed by a minimum of two hours.

Some trains diverted

Following the suspension of services through the ghat section, the Railways operated the KSR Bengaluru-Kozhikode-KSR Bengaluru and SMVT Bengaluru-Murdeshwar-SMVT Bengaluru Expresses via Shoranur and Palakkad, while the Vijayapura-Mangaluru Central-Vijayapura Express was operated via Londa and Madgaon on Sunday night. It cancelled the Panchaganga Express and daytime train services on the Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru Junction and Karwar-Yeshwantpur routes on Sunday and Monday.

Day and night work

Immediately after the track disruption was reported around 8.45 p.m. on Saturday, SWR’s Mysuru Division rushed a relief train with personnel and material to the location. Earthmovers were pressed into service to remove debris while personnel stabilised the affected slope with sandbags and other support material.

Mr Mittal supervised the restoration work on Sunday. He said emergency lights were provided to facilitate debris clearance through the night, enabling the track to be cleared. Late on Monday evening, the track-fit certificate was issued, he said.
