I’ve always been a bit of a pyjama enthusiast, so when I found out I was expecting my second baby, upgrading my sleepwear quickly became a priority. As a mum to a four-year-old and currently seven months pregnant, I’ve experienced first-hand just how much pregnancy can change the way you sleep. Between fluctuating hormones, a growing bump, overheating, endless trips to the bathroom and the general discomfort that seems to arrive at bedtime, getting comfortable at night can feel like a challenge in itself.

As my bump grew, I soon realised I was quite literally bursting out of my usual pyjama sets. The M&S pocket detail nightshirt ended up being the best piece of maternity nightwear that I tested as it prioritises comfort in all the right ways. The material is heavenly soft with a reassuring weight to it that makes it feel luxurious, yet it's still light enough to keep me cool during warm summer nights and those inevitable postpartum sweats.

I wore a size large (I was a UK 8/10 before pregnancy) and loved the loose, easy fit, especially because there was no waistband putting any pressure on my growing bump. Plus, because it’s oversized it’s easily seen me through every trimester, and I expect it will last well into the fourth, too.

Unlike some nightshirts, this one pulls on over the head rather than featuring a button front, so it's worth bearing in mind if you're specifically looking for something with easy nursing access. However, if pure comfort during pregnancy is your top priority, I genuinely think it's hard to beat.

I think it will come into its own during the postpartum, too, as it's ideal for hospital checks, changing maternity pads with ease or recovering from a C-section without pyjama bottoms rubbing against your incision.

Another huge plus is how brilliantly it washes – mine came out looking as good as new every time. In fact, I loved it so much that I've already bought a second one so I have a fresh nightie packed and ready for the hospital when baby arrives. These H&M pyjamas have been a real hit, especially considering the price point. The pointelle fabric has a lovely subtle texture that makes them feel far more expensive than they are, while still being breathable and soft against sensitive pregnancy skin. The maternity waistband comfortably accommodated my bump, sitting perfectly underneath without feeling tight, even after a full day of lounging.

I really like the understated neutral styling too – they’re simple, but in a way that makes them easy to wear throughout pregnancy and beyond. That said, I do wish the T-shirt was a little longer, as my bump has started to peek through as I entered my third trimester. But, in hindsight, I maybe should have sized up for a bit more coverage for the final stretch.

Still, if you’re shopping on a budget, they offer excellent value without looking or feeling cheap.

The moment I unpacked these Stripe & Star pyjamas, they felt incredibly premium. Although they’re not specifically designed as maternity pyjamas, Stripe & Stare is a brand I’ve worn and loved for years, so I decided to simply size up rather than switch to a pregnancy-specific style.

I chose the ‘peach latte leopard’ print, which is trendy without feeling overly ‘out there’, but there are plenty of other designs to choose from. I was so pleased to find that the silky-soft fabric draped beautifully over my growing bump rather than clinging to it. I opted for a size large (I was a UK8/10 pre-pregnancy) and found the relaxed fit ideal, with enough room that I can see myself wearing them postpartum, too.

The waistband sat comfortably whether I wore it over or under my bump without digging in, while the lightweight material kept me cool overnight but still cosy enough for lounging around the house. They’re definitely an investment purchase, but every detail, from the stitching to the feel against my skin, made them feel special.

The Chelsea Peers short pyjama set came in a close second for me after the M&S nightshirt, and they instantly put me in a good mood thanks to the cheerful sun print and relaxed silhouette. The Tencel modal fabric is buttery soft and lightweight, making them one of my favourites to wear during warmer nights and even through the string of recent heatwaves. They were, by far, one of the most comfortable options on this list.

The maternity shorts generously accommodated my bump without feeling restrictive. I chose a size 12 and found they had plenty of room for my bump to grow. Plus, I really liked that the button-up shirt uses poppers instead of traditional buttons, which adds practicality for breastfeeding later on.

I also appreciated that they looked like a stylish matching set rather than obvious maternity wear, so I happily wore them while lounging around during the day, too.

These Mori pyjamas felt unbelievably cosy from the first wear. The ribbed fabric has plenty of stretch, which allowed it to move comfortably with my changing shape while maintaining a stylish appearance. I particularly liked the collared shirt design, which gives them a smart, elevated look while remaining practical for feeding access later on.

They were warm enough for cooler evenings without making me overheat but I’d recommend reserving these for autumn/winter as they are quite thick compared to other options. The trousers have a decent amount of stretch and sat comfortably against my bump for overnight comfort.

If you’ve already had children, you’ll know just how good Mori sleepsuits are for babies – and this honestly feels like that same level of soft, newborn-style comfort, just for adults. I also like that they come in a choice of colours, so you can pick something that suits your style.

Overall, they feel like a really thoughtful set that balances comfort with a slightly more put-together look than standard pyjamas.

I loved how feminine these JoJo Maman Bébé pyjamas felt without sacrificing comfort. The pale blue shade and frill sleeve detail elevate what could otherwise be a simple short pyjama set. The waistband comfortably supported my bump without pressing against it, sitting neatly underneath or over the top while still staying in place overnight.

The fabric feels breathable and soft enough for sleeping, but also smart enough that I wouldn’t have minded wearing it around visitors after baby arrives. It strikes a nice balance between practical maternity wear and something that still feels pretty.

Although technically not pyjamas, I reached for this Cyberjammies dressing gown constantly while testing. The jersey fabric contains modal, just like the Chelsea Peers set, and felt wonderfully stretchy and comfortable over my bump.

I was also a big fan of the delicate floral print and lace trim, which make it feel far more luxurious than your average robe and gives you a real pick-me-up on those days you might not be feeling your best.

I particularly appreciated having it ready for chilly mornings and for throwing on quickly during late-night bathroom trips, of which there are many. It would also be lovely for the hospital, adding a little elegance during those early postpartum days.

These Their Nibs pyjamas immediately stood out thanks to their beautiful print and elevated design. They don’t look like maternity pyjamas at all, which I really appreciated, yet the loose cut offered plenty of room to accommodate my growing bump comfortably. The cropped style struck a happy medium between shorts and full-length trousers, making them surprisingly versatile across different temperatures.

Made from 100 per cent cotton, the fabric is incredibly lightweight and breathable, it almost feels as though you're not wearing anything at all. That made these my go-to pyjamas during several summer heatwaves, as they kept me feeling cool and comfortable despite the cropped trouser design.

The trade-off is that the fabric is slightly see-through, but I'd happily accept that for how airy and cooling they felt on even the hottest nights. They felt crisp yet soft against the skin, and I loved wearing them during slower weekends at home when I wanted to feel put together despite being heavily pregnant.

This Hatch nightgown is clearly designed with labour and postpartum in mind, and it really shows in the details. The fabric is wonderfully soft and stretchy while still being breathable enough for those early postpartum days when everything can feel a bit unpredictable.

I found it incredibly comfortable to sleep in because there was no waistband to contend with, and it offers enough coverage so you could confidently move around a maternity ward. It’s simple rather than glamorous, but functionality is absolutely the focus here.

The breastfeeding design is one of its most practical features. It uses discreet front snap fastenings, so you can unpop the panels to allow easy skin-to-skin access for feeding or pumping. In reality, this is the kind of thing you can do one-handed, which makes a huge difference when you’re holding a newborn. There are also hidden snaps at the back, which provide full, easy access for epidurals during labour – a really thoughtful detail that makes it hospital-ready in a way most nightwear simply isn’t.

It is incredibly expensive, and I don’t say that lightly. But if there was ever a time to invest in a piece that truly earns its place, it’s pregnancy, labour and postpartum. This is one of those items that feels purpose-built for that short but intense period where comfort, access and practicality genuinely matter more than anything else.
