World Championship slots staked in Lapu-Lapu 70.3

The staging of the Ironman 70.3 in Lapu-Lapu presented by Megaworld will be a two-for-one race, as Filipino age-group athletes get the chance to chase berths in the World Championship slated later this month in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

There will be a total of 50 age-group qualifying slots, as the top 25 men and the same number of women will see action in the worlds slated Aug, 28 to Aug. 29 as the city puts on full display its outdoor attractions, Civil War heritage and iconic landmarks like Lookout Mountain and Walnut Street Bridge.

Under the qualification system, every male and female age-group champion automatically earns a guaranteed slot to the World Championship. Should the winner decline, the berth rolls down to the second-place finisher and then to third place within the same age group.

For Filipino triathletes, the Aug. 9 Lapu-Lapu race presents more than another stop on the racing calendar. It is an opportunity to test themselves against some of the sport’s best, compete in a world-class race environment without leaving the country, and possibly turn a strong performance in Cebu into a ticket to the biggest stage in long-course triathlon.

The event in Lapu-Lapu will be over 1.9 kilometers of open-sea swim, 90-km bike ride and a 21.1-km run over a demanding course that has become one of the favorites in the world 70.3 calendar.

This year’s staging also marks the 12th anniversary of the 70.3 in Cebu, a milestone that highlights the event’s longevity and growing stature within the global Ironman circuit. Over the past decade, the race has consistently attracted elite professionals and thousands of age-group competitors while earning a reputation for world-class organization and race execution.

More than 1,000 athletes from 48 countries are competing in this year’s edition, further cementing the event’s international appeal.

Headlining the professional field are 2024 champion and Olympic bronze medalist Henri Schoeman of South Africa and Australian Olympian Natalie Van Coevorden, both to spearhead a banner elite field.

Meanwhile, the RLC Residences Ironkids will make history as it opens main event action on Saturday with a record field of more than 600 young participants, underscoring the sport’s growing popularity among Filipino youth and the host city’s commitment to grassroots triathlon development.

Organized by Sunrise Events, Inc., the swim-run event for children aged 6 to 15 has attracted its biggest turnout yet, drawing aspiring triathletes from Lapu-Lapu City and neighboring towns and provinces. The milestone participation reflects the continuing success of Ironkids as both an entry point for first-time racers and a competitive stage for young athletes looking to sharpen their skills.
