Signal No. 2 still up as 'Maymay' to make landfall over Ilocos Sur or La Union

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Storm Maymay (international name: Kujira) may make landfall over Ilocos Sur or La Union this afternoon or evening as it maintains its strength while moving slowly west of La Union, PAGASA said.

In its 8 a.m. bulletin on Wednesday, August 5, the state weather bureau said Maymay was spotted 170 kilometers west of Bacnotan, La Union, with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center, gustiness of up to 80 kph and a central pressure of 998 hectopascals.

The tropical storm is moving slowly westward.

Wind signals. The following areas are under Signal No. 2:

  • central and southern portions of Ilocos Sur
  • northern and central portions of La Union
  • northwestern Pangasinan
  • southwestern Abra
  • western Mountain Province
  • northwestern Benguet

Under Signal No. 2, gale-force winds of 62 to 88 kph may be experienced within 24 hours, posing a minor to moderate threat to life and property.

Meanwhile, the following areas are under Signal No. 1:

  • Ilocos Norte
  • rest of Ilocos Sur
  • rest of La Union
  • rest of Pangasinan
  • Apayao
  • rest of Abra
  • Kalinga
  • rest of Mountain Province
  • Ifugao

  • Nueva Vizcaya
  • northern portions of Zambales, Tarlac and Nueva Ecija
  • northern and central portions of Aurora

Under Signal No. 1, strong winds of 39 to 61 kph may be experienced within 36 hours, posing minimal to minor threats to life and property.

Strong winds. PAGASA said the southwest monsoon and the outer circulation of Maymay will bring strong to gale-force gusts over most of Luzon and Visayas on Wednesday, especially in coastal and upland areas.

By Thursday and Friday, gusty conditions are expected over most parts of the country.

Heavy rainfall. PAGASA warned that Tropical Storm Maymay and the southwest monsoon (habagat) will continue to bring heavy rainfall over several parts of Luzon in the coming days.

For Wednesday, the weather bureau forecast 100 to 200 millimeters of rain over La Union, Pangasinan, Benguet and Zambales, while 50 to 100 mm of rainfall is expected over Ilocos Sur, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Pampanga and Bulacan.

The southwest monsoon is also expected to bring 50 to 100 mm of rain over Metro Manila, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna and Occidental Mindoro.

On Thursday, 100 to 200 mm of rainfall is forecast over Ilocos Sur, La Union and Benguet, while 50 to 100 mm is expected over Pangasinan, Abra, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Kalinga and Nueva Vizcaya due to Maymay.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon may dump 100 to 200 mm of rain over Occidental Mindoro and 50 to 100 mm over Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas and Antique.

By Friday, PAGASA said 50 to 100 mm of rainfall is expected over Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro and Antique.

Sea conditions. A gale warning remains in effect over the western seaboard of Northern Luzon.

Very rough seas of up to 4.5 meters are forecast over the seaboards of Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan. Sea travel is risky for all types of vessels, and mariners are advised to remain in port or seek shelter.

Rough to moderate seas are also expected over several coastal waters in Luzon and parts of Mindanao. PAGASA advised operators of small vessels and motor bancas to take precautionary measures and avoid sailing if possible.

Track, intensity. PAGASA said Maymay is forecast to move generally eastward and may make landfall over Ilocos Sur or La Union this afternoon or evening before crossing Northern and Central Luzon.

The tropical storm is expected to weaken into a tropical depression by Thursday morning and may further weaken into a low pressure area by Thursday afternoon or evening after moving inland.
