Officials of a prominent college in Surathkal police limits caught three students in the campus with 290 gm cannabis in their possession, packed in multiple small packets.

Mangaluru Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said the college strengthened its monitoring system and began checking of students after the police department conducted multiple awareness drives against drug abuse.

Commending the move by the college, Mr. Reddy said, “This is an encouraging sign. Many colleges are now proactively conducting checks and their Anti-Drug Committees (ADCs) are functioning effectively. If all colleges show the same commitment, we can easily create completely drug free and healthy campuses in a very short time.”

The college authorities immediately informed the jurisdictional police, who conducted test that revealed that the three students had consumed drugs. Police registered an FIR under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, including Section 27 (b) for consumption and Section 8 (c) for possessing cannabis.

Police produced the student, who had brought the cannabis to the college campus, before the jurisdictional magistrate. The court, after considering his educational status and the quantity involved, released him on bail on surety.

Mr. Reddy said police are trying to apprehend the peddler who supplied cannabis to these students.

The police have been carrying out multiple awareness drives on and off campuses against drug abuse, and cautioning students not to fall prey to the vice. They conduct surprise tests on students travelling to college by college buses to ascertain they are not under the influence of narcotic drugs. In one such random test on over 300 students, one student was found to have consumed drugs.
