Resuming its footpath clearance drive, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) authorities on Wednesday carried out a footpath encroachment clearance drive on Sayyaji Rao Road.

MCC personnel from Abhaya led by officials went about clearing the encroachment on the footpath on both sides of Sayyaji Rao Road.

The MCC staff began the drive from K.R. Circle by appealing to the vendors through a public address system to immediately vacate the footpaths and warned them that their materials will be taken away if they failed to abide by the directions.

Most of the footpath vendors obliged by removing their items including garments, footwear, plastic items, fruits, bangles etc.

The MCC authorities had begun a footpath clearance drive to ensure free movement of pedestrians in line with the directions issued by the Supreme Court.

Some of the vendors on Sayyaji Rao Road said they were using only two feet of the footpath and were not hindering the free movement of the pedestrians. They, however, pointed out that some of the shopkeepers were using a portion of the footpath to display their wares.

They said they were doing business on the footpath without affecting the pedestrians. “We barely earn ₹500 a day to feed our families. Most of our customers are also poor people,” said a footpath vendor.

A vendor said he had been doing business on the footpath for three decades now and some of them had even been given valid ID cards by the MCC authorities.
