The Schumacher racing dynasty is preparing to welcome a new baby after Michael Schumacher’s nephew David revealed he and his new wife Vivien are expecting their first child.

David Schumacher, 24, a racing driver, and Vivien Schumacher, 25, the Hungarian racing driver formerly known as Vivien Keszthelyi, shared the news on Wednesday.

The announcement is a rare cause for celebration for the family after seven-time Formula One world champion Michael’s life-changing skiing accident, and David's estrangement from his mother Cora Schumacher.

In a sweet photo they both posted on Instagram, the couple can be seen kissing in the reflection of a mirror placed on grass beside a lake and mountains.

‘Baby’ is written across the glass with a heart next to it, while a teddy bear, knitted blanket and tiny white boots are arranged around it.

‘Love made us two. Life is making us three,' they captioned the post. They have not yet disclosed the baby’s sex or due date.

The child will be the first grandchild of David’s parents, retired Formula One driver Ralf Schumacher, 51, and German reality television personality, model and former racing driver Cora, 49.

David and Vivien married in an intimate ceremony in Salzburg in February after eight years together, having become engaged on a beach in the Maldives last November.

Both have built careers in motorsport, with David currently driving a Ford Mustang GT3 for HRT Ford Racing in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup.

But their wedding revealed the depth of David’s rupture with Cora, who was not invited and only discovered through the media that her only child had married.

She said at the time: ‘As a mother, I am not angry with my son, but simply incredibly sad that things are the way they are. That is all I can say about it.’

The relationship had broken down during the bitter and highly public fallout from Ralf’s announcement in July 2024 that he was in a relationship with Frenchman Étienne Bousquet-Cassagne, 36.

Cora, who was married to Ralf from 2001 until their divorce was finalised in 2015, said she felt ‘used’ by their marriage and questioned whether her former husband had been honest with her.

Ralf responded by publishing private messages which he said showed Cora had known about his relationship with Étienne. She disputed his interpretation, maintaining that Étienne had originally been introduced to her as a business associate.

David then publicly sided with his father in a now-deleted statement and urged his mother to ‘leave us alone’.

There has been no indication that Cora and David have reconciled since she was excluded from his wedding, although Cora subsequently said she wished David and Vivien ‘all the very best’.

Ralf has since married Étienne in Saint-Tropez, less than two years after publicly coming out as gay.

David served as his father’s best man at the ceremony in May, with Vivien joining him among around 110 guests at celebrations filmed for the Sky documentary Ralf & Étienne.

Étienne is a former French local and regional politician who now works with the Schumacher Wines business and has also been described as Ralf’s business manager.

Ralf, who won six grands prix during his Formula One career, now works as a pundit and co-commentator for Sky Germany.

David has followed both his father and his famous uncle into motor racing, competing in Formula Three and the DTM before moving into GT racing.

Vivien began racing at 13 and was selected for the Audi Sport Racing Academy. She went on to compete in the Asian Formula Three Championship, the inaugural W Series and Euroformula Open.

The pregnancy comes as intense interest continues to surround racing icon Michael, 57, whose family has guarded his medical privacy for more than a decade.

The Ferrari legend suffered a traumatic brain injury after hitting his head on a rock while skiing in Méribel in the French Alps on December 29, 2013.

He was placed in a medically induced coma, but his manager confirmed in June 2014 that he had emerged from it and left hospital to continue his rehabilitation. He was later moved to the family home in Switzerland.

His wife Corinna Schumacher, 57, and a medical team are understood to oversee his care, but the family has released almost no information about his present condition and he has made no verified public appearance since the accident.

Reports in January claimed Michael was no longer confined to bed and could sit upright in a wheelchair, although those details have not been publicly confirmed by his family.

David and Vivien’s baby will be Michael’s great-niece or great-nephew and extend one of motorsport’s most famous family lines into another generation.
