Two women belonging to the Koya tribe, affected by floods in the Sabari river, gave birth to two girl babies on Wednesday at a Primary Health Centre in Polavaram district after they were shifted to the hospital as part of the relief operations.

As many as 149 pregnant women, mostly belonging to the Koya and Konda Reddi tribes, were shifted to nearby government hospitals after their villages were affected by the floods since August 1.

“The pregnant women, identified as Peesam Vijaya and Borra Sailaja, have given birth to two girls in Tulasipaka Primary Health Centre and Rekhapalli PHC on Wednesday. The health condition of the mothers and infants is normal,” Polavaram District Collector K. Dinesh Kumar stated in a release.

The two women – Peesam Vijaya, a native of Bodrayigudem village along the banks of Sabari river in Chintoor mandal and Borra Sailaja, a native of Vaddigudem, a village adjacent to the confluence of the Sabari with Godavari river in V.R. Puram mandal. The two mothers and infants will be discharged after scheduled vaccines are administered in the hospital.

The remaining 147 pregnant women who were admitted to various government hospitals in the Chintoor agency in the wake of Sabari and Godavari floods will remain in the hospitals for further care.

Relief camps

On Wednesday, Mr. Kumar announced that 15 relief camps will remain open until the people affected by the flood return to their habitations, despite the flood warning having been withdrawn. At least 22 boats are in operation to distribute essential commodities to the affected people.
