The death has occurred of the father of the late singer-songwriter Shane MacGowan following a “short illness.”
A death notice on Rip.ie reads that Maurice MacGowan died peacefully and surrounded by family on August 3rd whilst in the care of staff at University Hospital Limerick.
He was originally from Ranelagh in Dublin but also lived in Silvermines and in Nenagh in Co Tipperary.
MacGowan was predeceased by his “beloved wife Therese and cherished son Shane. “
Therese MacGowan, 87, was killed when the car she was driving struck a wall in Ballintoher near her home in Silvermines on New Year’s Day in 2017.
She was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shane MacGowan, who was the former frontman of The Pogues, died on November 30th, 2023. He was 65.
Maurice MacGowan is survived and will be “sadly missed” by his daughter, Siobhan, son-in-law Anthony, daughter in law Victoria Mary Clarke, nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
His funeral service will take place at the Shannon Crematorium on Saturday at 4pm. The service will be live-streamed.
