Advocating “full Statehood” for J&K, Congress on Thursday (August 6, 2026) demanded constitutional safeguards for land and public employment for the people of J&K.
Congress Member of Parliament Dr. Syed Naseer Hussain, while commenting on seven years of abrogation of Article 370, said that constitutional safeguards for land and public employment for the people is one of the key demands of the party.
He said delimitation has been completed and elections have been held in J&K. “Yet, J&K continues under a constitutional arrangement where an unelected Lieutenant Governor exercises overriding authority over matters that should rest with an elected government. This departs from the federal principles of our constitution and denies the people the full measure of democratic self-governance enjoyed by every other State,” he said.
He said his party demands “immediate and unconditional restoration of full Statehood to J&K”. “Full constitutional authority for the democratically elected government so that the people can govern themselves through their elected representatives,” said MP Hussian.
Mr. Hussian reminded the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister of their “repeated assurances to the nation that Statehood would be restored, yet those assurances remain unfulfilled.”
The Congress leader called for adherence to India’s constitutional framework, democratic institutions and federal principles. “The people of J&K have waited for seven years. The Union government must fulfill its repeated commitment and restore full Statehood without further delay,” he added.
