When Meghan Markle debuted her Netflix lifestyle series With Love, Meghan last year, comparisons to domestic doyenne Martha Stewart were inevitable.
But Stewart, never one to mince her words, has made it clear what she thinks of the Duchess’s venture.
In a new interview with People from her 156-acre farm in Bedford, New York, the 85-year-old revealed she recently attended a dinner party in California with Markle.
“She had just gotten back from the palace,” Stewart revealed, referencing Markle and Prince Harry’s recent reunion with King Charles and Queen Camilla in the U.K.
“I didn’t talk to her really more than to say a couple words, but I know she was talking about it,” the entrepreneur added.
Asked what she thought about the royal stepping into her space with a lifestyle show, Stewart replied bluntly: “If you’re an actress, it’s hard to then transition to a princess and then from a princess into a homemaking guru on a television show. It doesn’t sort of follow. So go from there.”
The Independent has contacted the Duchess of Sussex for comment.
Markle’s show “reimagines the genre of lifestyle programming, blending practical how-tos and candid conversation with friends, new and old,” according to the official Netflix description.
In it, “Meghan shares personal tips and tricks, embracing playfulness over perfection and highlights how easy it can be to create beauty, even in the unexpected. She and her guests roll up their sleeves in the kitchen, the garden, and beyond, and invite you to do the same.”
The show featured appearances by celebrities such as Chrissy Teigen and Mindy Kaling, as well as a cameo by Prince Harry. The show aired for two seasons in 2025 and had a holiday special.
Despite being slated by critics — including one-star reviews from The Independent for both seasons — Markle was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in the outstanding lifestyle program category. They will be presented in October this year.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Netflix was parting ways with Markle’s lifestyle brand months after the streamer signed a multi-year TV and film contract with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Markle initially launched As Ever in April 2025 in partnership with Netflix’s Consumer Products division. Alongside the brand, which sells products like wine, tea and jams.
A spokesperson for As Ever told The Independent that the lifestyle brand will continue “independently.”
“As Ever is grateful for Netflix’s partnership through launch and our first year,” they said. “We have experienced meaningful and rapid growth, and As Ever is now ready to stand on its own. We have an exciting year ahead and can’t wait to share more.”
