Commuters have complained about the slow progress of the renovation of the Gummidipoondi railway station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. While they welcome the station’s inclusion in the redevelopment project after years of neglect, they criticise railway officials for failing to provide adequate passenger amenities at the station.

S. Suresh Babu, president of Gummidipoondi Railway Passengers’ Welfare Association, said that though lifts had been installed on all platforms, the absence of one on the Bazaar Road side of the station made it difficult for senior citizens and women to access Platform 1, where the suburban trains are operated from.

While appreciating the creation of a big parking space on the Bazaar road side, commuters point out the lack of parking facilities on the Bypass Road side, where the Gummidipoondi SIPCOT complex is located.

R. Ponambalavanan, of Peddikuppam, want work on the third and fourth lines to be expedited. Commuters also seek the extension of the platform shelter on Platform 3, as the rear four coaches of the Circar Express remained outside its covered area, and an increase in the speed limit on the loop line from 15 kmph to 30 kmph.

Stating that the Gummidipoondi railway station was becoming a key transport hub, they demanded stoppage for long-distance trains, as they currently had to travel to Dr. MGR Central station to board them.
