Lund and Gävle see sharp rise in student rent

The cities of Lund and Gävle have both seen the sharpest rise in rental prices for students, according to a comparison of sublets of student housing on the Qasa marketplace, with the average price per square metre rising by 13.3 percent and 12.1 percent since a similar study in 2025.

Stockholm remains the most expensive city for student sublets, with a student apartment costing over 8,500 kronor a month. Umeå was the cheapest at 5,400 kronor a month.

Eskilstuna was the only student city where the average rental cost had fallen over the past year, with the average price down by 3.9 percent.

The rental study was carried out by the comparison site Zmarta, using Qasa's data.

Heat wave over with rain and cool temperatures expected

Sweden's state weather forecaster SMHI has declared the recent heat wave over, forecasting rain and cool weather this week over most of Sweden. Despite this, it warns that there is still a significant risk of forest fires in many places.

Areas at risk of forest fires include the whole of the west coast of Sweden, the Bay of Bothnia coast, and in the Stockholm, Uppsala and Södermanland regions.

"In many places, it is still dry and that means fires can still start even if it's no longer so hot," Erik Höjgård-Olsen, a meteorologist at SMHI, told TT.

He said that if rain falls as predicted in the coming days over some of these areas, the risk of wildfires will reduce significantly.

More parents in Sweden refusing Vitamin K injections

A growing number of parents in Sweden are refusing to allow their newborns to receive an injection of Vitamin K, increasing the risk of severe internal bleeding in some children.

Newborn children in Sweden are normally given the injection shortly after birth to prevent the bleeding, which is rare but can be life-threatening.

According to a study of two million Swedish newborns, published in Jama Pediatrics, a medical journal, the share of newborns whose parents refused the injection rose from 0.66 percent in 2006 to 1.5 percent in 2021, taking the number of babies unprotected from 667 to 1,619.

The study also found that internal bleeding in and around the brain in the first six months of the babies' lives was nearly three times higher in those that did not receive the injection.

Car crashes into Sundsvall gym

A car crashed through the window of a gym in Sundsvall late on Monday night in what police are currently treating as a case of reckless driving. No one was injured in the accident, although the driver was taken to hospital to be checked for injuries.

Chris Sandberg with the local police said that it was still too early to know for sure whether the driver can be charged for recklessness.

"We don't know if that will be the final result. It could easily turn out that the driver has done nothing wrong but instead been hit by a sudden illness," he said.

According to TT, the gym was open at the time of the accident.
