The number of people reported missing in Malappuram district has been rising steadily, according to Crime Records Bureau data. As many as 363 people have gone missing from the district so far this year.
The figures show a clear rise over the past few years. In 2022, as many as 534 people were reported missing in the district. The number went up to 536 in 2023 and then rose sharply to 784 in 2024. In 2025, 733 missing cases were reported.
According to the police, many of those reported missing are young people who leave home while travelling to schools, colleges, or workplaces. Girls and women make up a significant share of the cases. While the police have traced many missing persons, several cases remain still unresolved.
Family disputes are among the common reasons for people leaving home. Some youngsters leave following arguments with parents, while others elope with partners. The police and officials are also seeing concerns linked to social media.
Police officials said that young people could form close relationships with strangers through social media platforms without knowing much about them. In some cases, youngsters have left home to meet people they had known online for only a short period. “Such meetings could expose them to risks, including exploitation, fraud, and physical harm,” said a senior police officer without going on record.
According to social psychologists, the problem is not limited to online relationships. A lack of communication at home can also make young people more vulnerable.
Children who face harsh punishment, constant conflict, or neglect may choose to leave home rather than seek help from family members.
Across the State, 5,253 people have been reported missing so far this year. The actual number could be higher, as some families wait for days before approaching the police, hoping to locate their relatives on their own.
Police advise families to report a person missing without delay and to share details of recent contacts, social media activity and possible destinations.
For parents, maintaining open communication with children and being aware of their online interactions can help identify risks before they lead to more serious consequences.
