Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways are expected to lower their fuel surcharges on flights from Japan to North America and Europe to ¥50,000 to ¥55,000 for tickets issued in September and October, sources said Wednesday.

The plan comes as aviation fuel prices have fallen after rising sharply earlier in the year amid turmoil in the Middle East.

Both airlines had raised the surcharges on the routes for tickets issued in July and August to a record ¥65,000 from ¥56,000 for May and June.

The companies will also reduce their surcharges on routes to other destinations for tickets issued in September and October.

The surcharges are calculated based on the averages of aviation fuel market prices and of foreign exchange rates over the previous two months.
