The Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium of the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) regional centre, Vizhinjam, is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Established in August 1996, Sagarika is home to 83 species of marine organisms and has grown into a popular centre for marine research, education, and conservation.

Colourful ornamental fishes are among its major attractions. Visitors to the aquarium can also see 35 types of bony fish such as clownfish, damselfish, surgeonfish, squirrelfish, angelfish, and butterflyfish. Sharks and rays, sea anemones, sea urchins, marine shrimps, crabs, lobsters, and a variety of other fascinating marine life such as turtles, plants, and seaweed can also be seen at the centre.

By bringing the wonders of the underwater world closer to the public, Sagarika offers visitors an opportunity to observe marine organisms at close quarters and understand the diversity of life beneath the waves.

The aquarium is also popular among children and students. Students get to learn about marine biodiversity and the importance of protecting ocean ecosystems in an engaging manner at the centre.

Families too throng Sagarika to combine leisure with an experience of rich marine life.

It is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Entry fee is ₹40 for adults and ₹20 for children, a CMFRI statement said.
