Real Madrid goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois has told new Barcelona midfielder, Rodri, that the Spaniard has missed a major opportunity by opting to join the Catalans instead of Los Blancos.

Nevertheless, the goalkeeper emphasised that each transfer target ultimately makes their own decision regarding which club they wish to represent.

During a half-time interview in the match between Los Blancos and Espanyol, Courtois delivered a clear message to Rodri.

He told Diario AS, “Well, everyone decides what they want to do. If he chose another club, it’s his loss.”

Rodri was among the transfer targets for Los Blancos in the current summer transfer window. The 15-time UEFA Champions League winners were also considered the frontrunners to acquire the midfielder.

However, Barcelona entered the competition for the player’s signature and successfully signed him from Manchester City for €76 million, ahead of Real Madrid.

The midfielder’s choice appears to have caused discontent within the Los Blancos camp, as only a handful of players have previously declined the chance to join the European giants.

Meanwhile, Rodri’s acquisition would have bolstered Jose Mourinho’s midfield, providing the balance that has been lacking since the exits of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

Nonetheless, Real Madrid’s midfield remains robust, and they are anticipated to navigate various challenges in the ongoing 2026-27 season.

Conversely, Hansi Flick’s midfield would benefit from Rodri’s defensive prowess and his capability to stabilise the midfield while effectively distributing the ball.
