House collapses in Zamboanga del Sur due to soil erosion

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur — A house in Barangay Tubod, Lakewood, Zamboanga del Sur, collapsed following soil erosion apparently caused by heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon late Saturday afternoon, authorities confirmed.

Capt. Derf Jay Maquinta, spokesperson for the Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Office, said personnel of the Lakewood Municipal Police Station rushed to Purok 1 at around 4 p.m. on July 25 after receiving a report from a concerned citizen.

Initial investigation revealed that the erosion caused the collapse of a home owned by a 59-year-old resident.

No casualties were reported.

Authorities reminded residents in landslide- and erosion-prone areas to remain vigilant and immediately report any signs of ground movement to ensure public safety. /mcm
