Sam Smith confirms engagement to longtime boyfriend Christian Cowan
Sam Smith has confirmed their engagement to fashion designer Christian Cowan after more than three years together.
Smith, who goes with them/they/their pronouns, shared the news in an interview with The New York Times after they referred to Cowan as their fiancé while discussing their upcoming fifth studio album, “Hazel Eyes.”
The singer also revealed that the album’s title was inspired by Cowan’s eye color, while its lead track, “Everlasting Love,” was written beginning the night before their first date and completed after they became a couple.

The couple were first romantically linked in late 2022. They largely kept their relationship private before making their official red-carpet debut as a couple at the 2024 Met Gala.
Engagement rumors surfaced earlier this year when Cowan was seen wearing a diamond ring around the time of the 2026 Met Gala, though the pair did not address the speculation until now.
Smith rose to international fame after appearing on Disclosure’s 2012 hit “Latch” and Naughty Boy’s chart-topping 2013 single “La La La.”
Their breakthrough debut album, “In the Lonely Hour” (2014), spawned global hits including “Stay with Me,” “I’m Not the Only One,” “Lay Me Down” and “Money on My Mind.”
Over the years, Smith has won multiple Grammy Awards and an Academy Award and Golden Globe for “Writing’s on the Wall,” the theme song for the James Bond film “Spectre.”
