Chittoor police have booked 771 persons for drunk driving and collected ₹77.10 lakh in fines during from January to July this year, as part of the enforcement drive against traffic violations and to ensure road safety.

Speaking to the media here on Sunday, Superintendent of Police (SP) Tushar Dudi said that a sustained crackdown had been in place to prevent accidents and safeguard lives by discouraging motorists from driving under the influence of alcohol. He said that drunk driving was not merely a traffic violation but also a reckless act that could result in irreversible tragedies for families.

Mr. Dudi stressed that alcohol impairs judgment, slows reaction time and reduces control over vehicles, significantly increasing the likelihood of serious road accidents. “Police teams have been conducting regular drunk-and-drive checks across the district, covering national highways, major roads, urban centres and other accident-prone locations,” he said.

Motorists found under the influence of alcohol through breath analyser tests are being booked under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and produced before courts. Besides monetary penalties, offenders may also face suspension of their driving licences and other legal action wherever warranted. Mr. Dudi urged the public to act responsibly, strictly follow road safety norms, and never drive after consuming alcohol under any circumstances.
