Urban Art in Mersin

· 29 March 2026 · 1 sources

The southwestern Turkish province of Mersin has launched a transformative urban renewal project turning aging residential buildings into canvases for world-famous artworks. Initiated in 2017 by the Toroslar Municipality, the initiative revitalizes neighborhoods such as Akbelen and Güneykent by reproducing masterpieces from renowned painters on building facades, effectively creating an open-air art gallery. This project not only enhances the visual appeal of the area but also promotes cultural tourism and community pride. By integrating art into urban spaces, Mersin sets an example of how cities can creatively preserve and rejuvenate aging infrastructure.
